Former Director, Center for Medicare Services, Past President Society of Thoracic Surgeons
Jeffrey Rich, M.D. Chief Clinical Advisor, was appointed Chairman of Operations and Strategy for the Cleveland Clinic Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute in July 2017. Dr. Rich has held a variety of high-profile positions focusing on healthcare quality improvement, payment reform, and transparency. He directed the Center for Medicare Management in 2008, was president of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons in 2012, and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Quality Forum.
Dr. Rich is a cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in adults with cardiac disease, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory assistance, and trans-catheter based procedures. He practiced at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for over 20 years and held various positions there, including scientific director of Sentara Cardiovascular Research Institute, surgical director of the Heart Transplant Program, director of the Ventricular Assist Device Program and a member of the Cardiac Executive Committee. Dr. Rich also acted as an assistant professor of clinical surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Dr. Rich earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and went on to serve a general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Stanford University. He is currently a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, an organization for which he has served in leadership positions for more than a decade, the American Association for Thoracic Surgeons, the National Rural Health Association, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society.
