On September 23rd, over 90 participants convened to learn about the VCSQI/VHAC Cardiogenic Shock Initiative.
VCSQI Updates
Dr. Robert Shor of Virginia Heart and Chairman of VCSQI, welcomed participants to the meeting and announed the election of three new Board Members

Behnam Tehrani, MD – Inova
Angie Carneal, RN – VCU
VHAC Updates
Dr. Peter O’Brien of Centra Health and Founder of VHAC gave a brief update of the work taking place within VHAC.
He later shared his experience of working with VCSQI which led to the current joint effort in creating the upcoming statewide STEMI database.
A sample report from the STEMI database was also shared.
Case Report
Dr. Sula Mazimba (UVA) kicked off the meeting with a shock case study in a 54 yr old male patient with history of hypertension, obesity, and tobacco use.

Welcome New VCSQI Board Members
We are excited to introduce you to the newest members of the board.
Behnam Tehrani, MD
Dr. Behnam Tehrani is a board-certified interventional cardiologist. In 2006, he graduated from George Washington University/School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Dr. Tehrani serves as Medical Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Inova Heart and Vascular Institute. He specializes in the percutaneous management of complex coronary and peripheral vascular disease and cardiogenic shock.
Dr. Tehrani also serves as the Physician Champion of the VCSQI Shock Management Workgroup.


Shelley M. Cahalan, MSN
Shelley received her Masters of Science in Nursing Leadership from Allen College. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Aspen University. Shelley currently serves as the Quality Manager within Sentara’s Cardiovascular Service Line.
Shelley has been an advocate and resource to VCSQI for several years and brings enthusiasm and fresh perspective to the board.
Angie Carneal, MSN, RN, CCRN
Angie obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing from the Western Governor’s University. She current serves as the Nursing Director for Pauley Heart Center at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. Prior to this role, she served in various capacities within Bon Secours Health System.

Shock Teams, Shock Protocols and Shock Networks
Dr. Alex Truesdell (Inova) was called into a STEMI case and was unable to present his slides. In his stead, Dr. Benham Tehrani (Inova) provided an overview of Shock Teams, Protocols, and Networks.
In the meantime, Dr. Truesdell and STEMI team, listened to the presentation while conducting their procedure.

Panel Discussion

AKI Work Group
Introduces its Cardiology Co-Champion
Please welcome Kerry C. Prewitt, MD (Sentara) as the Co-Champion of the AKI Work Group.
Dr. Prewitt specializes in interventional cardiology and has over 36 years of experience in the field of medicine. Dr. Prewitt will help the workgroup in developing cardiology-specific AKI recommendations.
